Power Reporting: African Investigative Journalism Conference 2010Power Reporting: the African Investigative Journalism Conference

1 – 3 November  2010

Wits University, FNB Building, West Campus

This is the sixth year of Power Reporting and as always we will be bringing some of the best names in the industry to teach at the conference: James Myburgh, Caroline Southey, Dario Milo, Sam Sole, Adriaan Basson, John Perlman, Izak Minaar, Alon Skuy.

Joshua Prager, journalist and author of The Echoing Green, will open the strong story telling theme to the conference; there will be an emphasis on climate change, in preparation for 2011, when South Africa hosts the next round of talks that were so badly dented at Copenhagen; and we look at the rich and the poor – how to investigate the rich and report on the poor.

From across Africa we have Chief Bison Etahoben, Eric Mwamba, Olukayode Thomas, Fatuma Noor. Eva Flomo and Solomon Adebayo.

International speakers and trainers include Philip Beresford, editor, the Sunday Times Rich List, Brant Houston of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, Elena Egawhary from the BBC. Ron Nixon of The New York Times, Luuk Sengers from Denmark and Emmanuel Kala from Ushahidi, Kenya.

This year Power Reporting has joined forces with frayintermedia’s Narrative Journalism Conference, featuring some of South Africa’s top journalistic storytellers: Mandla Langa, Melinda Ferguson, Leonie Joubert and Angie Kapielanis.

There will be workshops and courses on:

  • privacy, defamation and freedom of information
  • business and finance
  • computer assisted reporting (CAR)
  • advanced internet research
  • crime and criminal justice
